Personal and professional papers Ward Hill Lamon. The collection contains source materials for biography of Lincoln, including three volumes of materials purchased from William Henry Hendon in 1869 and the correspondence related to the purchase; unpublished typescript of Lamon's history of the Lincoln administration, and other papers relating to his historical work, including items that concern the controversy over the Life of Abraham Lincoln. Also included are papers that cover Lamon's own life and career: numerous letters addressed to Lamon seeking Lincoln's patronage; papers relating to the his attempt to organize a brigade of Unionist Virginians in 1861, the office of the U.S. Marshal of the District of Columbia (1861-1865); a political attack on Lamon in 1862 by abolitionist senators over the continued enforcement of the fugitive slave law; Lamon family and finances (including wartime speculation and dealings in Colorado mining properties); Illinois political news, etc.

The collection has several strong subject points for the purpose of research including journalism and the writing process and the history of Los Angeles. There are many letters written during World War II that discuss life in America as well as abroad, especially Iwo Jima. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence to Smith from his readers, many of whom were persons of note, and Smith's own subject files of topics often discussed in his columns. The manuscripts include a number of Smith's notebooks as well as drafts of essays and monographs. The ephemera includes appearances of Smith's columns, photographs of Smith's work and family, and printed materials related to Smith's work and family life.

This collection consists of 35mm Kodachrome slides taken between 1954 and 1972. This collection of photographs taken by amateur photographer Palmer Conner documents by street the physical and social changes of Bunker Hill during the earliest stages of redevelopment. The collection is particularly strong in its depiction of the Bunker Hill neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles during redevelopment in the 1950s. Images chiefly consist of views of commercial and residential building exteriors taken from the street, including images of both new construction and older buildings in the process of being demolished.
