One set of art appreciation posters created by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1926. The set of 55 posters is housed within 5 large envelopes; there are 23 different posters, with duplicate copies of 9 of the 23. All of the posters contain black and white reproductions of photographs. Accompanying the posters within the first folder is a large piece of brown wrapping paper on which is written in ms.: "Mabel Spofford; from Boston Museum of Fine Arts, received April 7. 1956 art appreciation posters." The posters vary in size, but all are large. What follows is a listing of the contents of each envelope; the title at the top of the poster has been transcribed. Vere Foster's Complete Course of Drawing: Landscape

One drawing book entitled Vere Foster's Complete Course of Drawing, published by Blackie & Son, Limited, London, Glasgow and Dublin; and F.W. Devoe & Co., New York, ca. 1868. New Edition, 72 pages (only pages 6-8 are numbered) part VI (of XVI). This drawing book provides visual and textual instruction for landscape drawing. The first 8 pages, presumably written by Wimperis and Needham, contain instructional text. The black and white lithographs are signed primarily by J. Needham and F. (Frederick) Jones. The illustrated front cover is printed in blue ink; the back cover is a manufacturers' advertisement for "Vere Foster's Drawing Copy-Books". At the top of the back cover is the statement: "Vere Foster's Drawing Copy-Books have been adopted by the Department of Science and Art, South Kensignton, London; and both Writing and Drawing Copy-Books have been adopted by the Commissioners of National Education in Ireland, by the London and other principal School Boards, and by the Department of Public Instruction of the City of New York." The illustrations within this drawing book include both outline and complete views of English and Welsh landscapes, homes, bridges, and other natural views.

Water Color School Box

One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled Water Color School Box, manufactured by Wadsworth, Howland & Co., Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1895. The set is comprised of 10 small cakes of watercolor paint set within two rows of metal supports, one quill brush, one wooden stick, and a small stick of charcoal. The set is housed within a metal box; the lid is divided into four sections: the top two sections contain the manufacturer's name and address, the bottom two contain the title. The box is colored green and has gold lettering. A printed slip of paper is laid into the bottom of the box underneath the two rows of paints, so only a portion of it is legible: "When you need more of any of the colors in this box we will furnish them at short notice. Wadsworth, Howland & Co., Inc."

White's School Series of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand

One drawing book entitled White's School Series of Industrial Drawing, Free Hand, by H.P. Smith, published by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor & Co., New York and Chicago, copyright 1878. "Engravings by John Karst" appears on the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. This book consists of 16 pages with 15 lessons (lesson 15 is wanting). Each lesson is accompanied by blank space or partial-model for copying by the owner. Some of the items for copying include vases, plants and flowers, Egyptian and Greek ornaments and designs, and pattern designs. The front cover is illustrated with a decorative border and an image of a decorated vase. The inside back cover lists geometric terms and their definitions, as well as quotations from Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones. The outside back cover is a publisher's advertisement for "White's School Series of Industrial Drawing and Progressive Art Studies." This book is vertically oriented; the spine is along the long side of the book at the top, and is to be opened and used by lifting the cover up, instead of to the right, as usual. Some of the images have been copied in pencil by a previous owner. "Annie S. Todd" is written in ms. at the top of the front cover.

Grammar School Drawing Cards of Elementary Design

One set of drawing cards entitled Grammar School Drawing Cards of Elementary Design, by Lucius B. Morgan, printed by Grout & Putman, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1875. The envelope and cards identify this set as the "Second Series." The envelope also identifies Mr. Morgan as the "Teacher of Drawing in the Public Schools, Worcester, Mass." The envelope contains three double-sided cards. The six images on the cards contain simple leaf and flower designs which are then incorporated into more complex designs. For example, there is one image labeled "The Ivy" which show the simple ivy leaf and then the same leaf used in a repeating border and a fan design. Each card is labeled and has a set of designs. The cards have not been printed with identifying numbers. "Florence Belcher" and "$25.00" (price) are written in ms. on the cover.

Abbott’s Common School Drawing Cards

One set of drawing cards entitled Abbott’s Common School Drawing Cards, by Jacob and John S.C. Abbott, printed by Robert B. Collins, New York, 1874, Landscapes, Set 1, designed by B.H. Coe." On the back of the card box are instructions, entitled Arrangements, on the use of the cards. The cards are removed from the case by pulling on an insert. A notice "To the Teacher" on the verso of the insert explains how to teach drawing in school, and below this, "Reasons for Introducing Drawing into Common Schools" are listed. The card set is complete with the original forty cards, plus an extra card 1. They are numbered in Roman numerals, from No. I to No. XL, along with further drawing instructions on the back of each. For example, drawing card No. I shows a farm courtyard with various buildings and on the reverse the following instruction: "Whenever you have a pediment end of a building to draw, that is, an end terminated by a point at the top, where the two sides of the roof meet, as occurs in this lesson, always draw both the side walls first...."
