    Drawing and Painting Exercises After Models for Children

    One boxed painting set manufactured by W. & S. B comprised of 7 sheets of paper for drawing and painting, a paper palette onto which 6 small round cakes of watercolor paints are mounted, and 11 cutout stencils made from engravings. Also included is one stencil of the initials "OEL." The 11 "specimens" include a woman holding a bowl, a man with an apron full of fruit, and various farm animals. The seven sheets of paper contain original and traced artwork. One of the cakes of paint is missing from the palette, and only fragments remain of two others.

    One tracing book entitled National Portraits, published Kaufmann & Strauss Co, copyright 1905. The front cover shows a girl holding a portrait of George Washington, an eraser in her right hand and a pencil in her left. The book has 8 connect-the-dot images of famous men, with instructions below and a riddle. Portraits include George Washington, Columbus, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Edison. None of the dotted images have been connected. On the back cover "G34-75/6.00" has been written in pencil.

    One boxed painting set manufactured by Whitman Publishing Co. comprised of 8 round cakes of watercolor paint within wooden tubs, two oblong metal dishes, 2 sheets containing 16 color images entitled "Famous Paintings to Paint and Color," 4 double-sided sheets, each containing 4 images for painting, and a book of 11 color images entitled "Color Reproductions of Ten Famous Paintings: Including Historical Sketches of the Artists and the Pictures, Suitable for Framing." Some of the images included are: "The Blue Boy" by Gainsborough; "The Helping Hand" by Renouf; "The Sistine Madonna" by Raphael, and "Portrait of George Gisz" by Holbein. One of the images has been partially painted.

    One painting book entitled Our Pets' Portraits Painting Book, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Co., Ltd., New York, London and Paris, ca. 1910. The booklet is part of Father Tuck's Little Artists' Series. This booklet is 24 unnumbered pages in length, and is composed of color and matching outline images for coloring. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a girl painting a portrait of a cat. "Father Tuck's Little Artists Series" is printed in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover. The back cover is a chromolithograph of a boy, dressed in a sailor suit, carving a piece of wood. Printed at the bottom of the back cover are: "No. 3629" below the publisher's logo; "Designed at the Studios in England"; and "Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Co., Ltd., New York-London-Paris". The inside of the front cover contains "Instructions for Little Artists", which are continued on the inside back cover. Most of the images have been colored in. "12.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

    One drawing book entitled Philips' Drawing Copy Book, Designed & Drawn by a Practical Teacher, No. 3, published by George Philip & Son, London, ca. 1870. This book is comprised of 8 lithographed, unnumbered plates. Each plate is comprised of an image (buildings, such as houses and churches) and space for copying. There is no text. The title on the front cover is superimposed on a lithograph view of a man who is drawing at the edge of a lake, with a mountainous background. Most of the interior plates are signed by different artists. These include: Greet; Coalport; Birmingham; Troubridge; Bridnorth[?]; Douglas; the last image is unsigned. At the bottom of the front cover a blue paper label is mounted. It reads: "Boston School Supply Co. 15 Bromfield St., Boston, Mass. John A Boyle, Manager." The back cover bears a publisher's advertisement for "Philips' Drawing Copy Books, series of easy landscapes."
