    Hood's Sarsaparilla Painting Book

    One 36-page painting book, published by C.I. Hood & Co., of Lowell, Massachusetts, of images, chiefly in outline form for painting, with colored images to serve as a guide for student in the appropriate use of color. The book advertises Hood's Sarsaparilla, a patent medicine, and the company itself. There are images of children playing, of Hood's Factory and Hood's Farm, and even of Merry Maiden, the prize cow from Hood's Farm. The majority of the outline images have been filled in using watercolors.

    One painting book entitled Father Tuck's Butterfly Painting Book, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., ca. 1910. The front cover features six butterflies against a blue sky; the lower left corner bears the series title "Father Tuck's Little Artists' Series." The back cover features the company's trademark and "No. 3093" in the lower left-hand corner. The book has 12 pages of butterfly and moth images, some in outline, some in color. The pages are perforated to allow easy removal from the book. Many of the outline images have been painted in using watercolor.

    One painting book entitled Landscape Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover shows a winter landscape. The title page features a different title (Object Painting Book) than that found on the front cover. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for young painters," including how to mix paints. The back inside cover depicts a palette of red, green, yellow, blue and purple; matching paint has been applied to each color by the student. The book contains 8 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The outlined images were filled in using the complementary color image as a guide. All of the outlined images have been filled in with watercolors. In the upper-right hand corner of the title page, in pencil, is written "1.00".

    The Child's Palette: A Painting Book, Book No. 1

    One painting book entitled The Child's Palette: A Painting Book, Book No. 1, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1897. The cover of the book shows a group of animals dressed as children in a classroom and their stork teacher. The inside front cover has "a few practical instructions for young painters" including suggestions on what colors to include in the student's watercolor set. The book is designed so that the student could study a colored image and then practice on an "outline" (uncolored) image. A second uncolored image is also provided "giving opportunity for a second trial on the same design." There are a total of 24 images: eight in color and sixteen in outline. The images depict children and animals with tag lines at the bottom. None of the images have been filled in.

    One drawing book entitled Columbus Drawing Book for the Kiddies, published by Capital City Dairy Co., Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1917. The front cover shows a girl sitting at a table, drawing in a book with crayons; below the image is the subtext "Color with crayons, Win a Prize, See Inside." On the back cover is an image of four children carrying a box of Columbus Oleomargarine on two poles, as if it were on a sedan chair; above the image is printed "Look for this display in your grocer's store." A promotional piece for Columbus Oleomargarine, the booklet describes on the front inside cover and first page how to enter the contest (full instructions are given on pp. 10 & 11). The last page and back cover have recipes "in which Margarine has been Thoroughly Tested." There are 12 images in the book--six in color, six in outline. The outlined images were to be filled in using the complementary color image to its side as a guide. Each image illustrates a rhyming jingle also on the page, which makes reference to Columbus margarine. None of the images have been filled in. On the back cover, stamped in ink below "for sale by," is "Hertzler Bros. & Co., General Merchandise, Elizabethtown, Pa." and in the upper left-hand corner, in pencil, "98-90."

    One painting and drawing book entitled Little Folks' Painting and Drawing, published by Charles E. Graham & Co., New York, ca. 1900. The series title is 0701--Paint Book Series. The front cover of the book shows a little girl holding a palette of watercolors in one hand and a page of her paintings in the other. The back cover repeats the title of the book and features an image of two children asleep in a meadow and watched by four rabbits. The book contains twelve images, some printed in outline, others color printed to show color schemes. Most of the outlined images have been filled in with wax crayon. In the upper right-hand corner of the front cover in pencil is "50 [cents] 6448".
