    This collection consists of letters and documents related to the life and interests of Henry H. Markham. These papers deal mainly with the politics of the late 1800s, but include many from his files, dealing with mining and his other business interests. Subjects include: political trends in California, the California gubernatorial campaign of 1890, the 1896 election of President McKinley, and mining in California and Arizona (including some deeds of mining claims and reports).     Jerome H. Markham letters to Walter Markham

    Manuscripts

    Most of the letters are written by Jerome H. Markham of Buena Vista, Colorado, to his brother Walter Markham of Middletown, Connecticut. The letters address topics of concern to settlers such as health, land, livestock, and hunting. The most frequent subject is the need for money. Two of the letters are written by "Ronnie" and one by E. Webber (?). Many are written on letterhead from Colorado establishments such as hardware states and hotels.

    Letter from H.H. Markham to Rev. Richard Kaines, answering a query as to the dates of his time in office as Governor of California. Letter is on Exective Department, Sacramento, Cal. letterhead, sent from Pasadena, California.

    Alpheus B. Thompson letters to Timothy Wolcott

    These three letters were written by Alpheus Thompson to Timothy Wolcott during 1856 and 1857. In HM 18997, written 1856, September 6, from Santa Barbara, Thompson thanks Wolcott for looking after his son, Francis. In HM 18998 (dated 1857, June 2), Thompson writes of the advantageous opportunities in San Francisco in the real estate market, and asks Wolcott to look after Francis "for a few months longer." He also includes business details regarding property and other assets. The final letter in this series was written in San José, California, on June 17, 1857 (HM 18999), and Thompson asks if Wolcott would take Francis under his charge, and to "provide him with suitable Clothing and Board."

    Henry M. Paynter letter to Bern Dibner

    Manuscripts

    In this two-page letter to Dibner, Paynter comments on Dibner's recent series of articles published in the journal Electrical engineering. Paynter asks for Dibner's "interest and support in another project" involving the "origin and development of the now commonplace electric circuit symbols." The copies of his notes are for Paynter's class at MIT, "Analysis and design of engineering systems" (course 2.751). This is an incomplete copy.

    Charles C. (Charles Coulson) Rich letter to Sarah D. Rich

    Manuscripts

    Letter from Charles Rich in Little Salt Lake City to his wife Sarah D. Rich in Great Salt Lake City, Deseret. Rich writes that he has been ill but is recovering, describes his supplies and food, and asks Sarah to pay the taxes at home. He writes that he will send her something when he gets to the mines, gives instructions on building a storehouse, and implores Sarah to "take special care of the children." He also includes notes to his children telling them to behave properly.
