    Frances Power Cobbe letters

    Manuscripts

    Thirty-one of these letters were written by Cobbe. The letters relate to a variety of topics including: Cobbe's work with the anti-vivisection movement, literature, politics, Mary Somerville, the Ethnological Society of London, and other personal subjects. She mentions her partner Mary Lloyd several times (Mary is also the addressee of one letter). Addressees include author Sarah Sharp Heaton Hamer (Phyllis Browne); British novelist James Payn (letter mentions Sir Leslie Stephen); English surgeon and pathologist Sir James Paget; Lady Deborah Bowring; Dr. Reinhold Rost; surgeon Dr. Robert Dunn; Reverend Henry Allon; Archdeacon F. W. Farrar; and fellow suffragette Helen Taylor. There are also two letters by English religious philosopher James Martineau (one to Frances and one to Mary) and one letter by British scholar Francis William Newman to Frances.

    Queen of Hawaii, Liliuokalani letters to William Lee

    The letters authored by Queen Liliuokalani were written to her husband's cousin William Lee, of Lee and Shephard Publishers, while she was visiting Washington D.C. These letters deal chiefly with her book Hawaii's story by Hawaii's Queen. Liliuokalani asks Lee questions about copyright and strategies for selling the book. She also writes that she is going to sign three copies and send them to Queen Victoria, President William McKinley and Grover Cleveland; one letter mentions Gerrit P. Judd and Richard Armstrong

The collection contains personal, official, business, and social correspondence and manuscripts of Sir Richard Francis Burton and Lady Isabel Burton, chiefly covering the period of Burton's consulship in Trieste and Lady Burton's life after her husband's death.
