  Alpheus B. Thompson letters to Timothy Wolcott

  These three letters were written by Alpheus Thompson to Timothy Wolcott during 1856 and 1857. In HM 18997, written 1856, September 6, from Santa Barbara, Thompson thanks Wolcott for looking after his son, Francis. In HM 18998 (dated 1857, June 2), Thompson writes of the advantageous opportunities in San Francisco in the real estate market, and asks Wolcott to look after Francis "for a few months longer." He also includes business details regarding property and other assets. The final letter in this series was written in San José, California, on June 17, 1857 (HM 18999), and Thompson asks if Wolcott would take Francis under his charge, and to "provide him with suitable Clothing and Board."

  Letter to Timothy Wolcott

  Manuscripts

  This letter to Timothy Wolcott describes the difficult prospect of making a living in California under current conditions. It seems that Wolcott is considering a move to California, and the writer of the letter, who appears to be in the quartz mining business, is giving him both warning and advice. The signature is smudged, but the last name may be "Hill." The letter was written in San Francisco.

  Peter Andrew Clapsaddle diary

  In this diary, Clapsaddle writes daily entries while on his voyage from New York to San Francisco. In it. he talks about life on board the ship, seasickness, his asthma, three passengers dying on board, church services he attended and the meals he ate. He also gives the ship's position and course. He briefly mentions the ship's stops in Panama and Guatemala, the arrival in San Francisco and a job he obtained with the Evening telegram. With the diary is a typed biography of Clapsaddle, outline of his voyage, map of his voyage and typescript of the diary.

  Francis Thompson letters to Timothy Wolcott

  Manuscripts

  In the first of these two letters, Thompson informs Wolcott that he has arrived in Maine. The second is concerned with business and financial affairs, and Thompson writes "I think that my troubles are about over. And I doubt not but what you are as glad as my self." HM 19000 is dated 1857 (signed "Frank Thompson), July 18, and HM 19001 was written 1858, December 16.

  Diary and record book of James Madison Flake [microform] : 1887-1929 (bulk 1887-1889)

  Manuscripts

  Microfilm of the diary and record book of James Madison Flake, primarily focusing on his British mission from 1887-1889. The diary opens with his departure from Snowflake in 1887, his overland travels by rail to New York, and his sailing across the Atlantic to Liverpool. It then describes his mission work in Scotland, primarily in and around Glasgow and Dunfermline, and England, where he lived in Stockton. He also describes trips taken to London and Paris in 1889 and his return voyage home. There is one 1891 entry made in Snowflake. The end of the volume includes a brief autobiography of Flake, records of baptisms he performed in Arizona and Britain, and various family records to about 1929.

  Photographs related to the Sioux and Battle of Wounded Knee

  Consists of 63 copy prints of annotated and edited copies of photographs by photographers including George Trager, Frederick Kuhn, Henry R. Lock, and W. W. Hayword. The majority of this collection indicates that the original images were published by H. G. Johnson of New York and Nebraska. Photographs are of the American Indian Wars, focusing mainly on the Pine Ridge Campaign and Wounded Knee, and include images of Ghost Dances. They were taken primarily in South Dakota at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (also referred to as Pine Ridge Agency), the Great Sioux Reservation, Wounded Knee, and Deadwood. Members of various native peoples are depicted, including the Oglala Lakota, Sicangu (Brulé) Lakota, Dakota Yankton (Dakota Sioux) and Rosebud Sioux Tribe. Notable individuals include chiefs and leaders such as Two Strike (Numpkahapa/Nomkahpa), Jerome Crow Dog (Kȟaŋǧí Šúŋka), High Hawk, Young Man Afraid of His Horses (Tasunka Kokipapi), Kicking Bear, Red Cloud (Maȟpíya Lúta), Sitting Bull (Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake), Standing Elk, and Spotted Elk (Uŋpȟáŋ Glešká, also referred to by Americans as Big Foot). Members of the American military depicted include: General Eugene A. Carr, John M. Burke, Captain Charles W. Taylor, Frank Grouard, and members of the 7th and 9th calvaries. Please note that many of these photographs were taken in the aftermath of the Massacre at Wounded Knee and contain images of human remains. Other photographs within this collection contain racist, harmful, offensive, or inappropriate language.
