The manuscript fills a Pocket Diary 1864 (New York: Published Annually for the Trade); a 2 cent U.S. revenue stamp is affixed to the title page (an unusual version of the Liberty head).

A small pocket diary for 1864 with very brief entries, including rather laconic mentions of the demonstration on the Rapidan (February 6-7, 1864), battles of the Wilderness (May 6-7), Laurel Hill (May 8), Spottsylvania (May 8-12), Jericho Ford (May 25), Totopotomoy (May 28-31) and Cold Harbor (June 1-12). The diary fills about half of the Pocket Diary for 1864 (New York: Willy Wallach); the entries from June 19 on are blank.

James C. Ridgway diary

Pocket diary that Ridgeway kept in 1865 includes brief accounts of the battle at Hatcher's Run (Feb.5-7), Watkins's House (Mar. 25), the Appomattox Campaign (Mar. 28-April 9), the surrender of Lee and his army, and March to Washington, D.C. (May 2-12). The diary effectively ends on May 16; the rest of the manuscript consists of brief entries, mostly scattered accounts made in the 1868-1872.
