Letterbook of correspondence between Henry Hastings, 3rd Earl of Huntingdon, then Lord Lieutenant of Yorkshire, the Privy Council, and various sheriff, bailiffs, and Justices of the Peace, mainly Sir Henry Griffith, and other Yorkshire officials. The correspondence deals with military affairs in wapentakes of Buckrose and Dickering; also, with muster lists, assessments, papers regarding poor relief, etc., copies of letters from Sir Thomas Postumus Hobby, Matthew Hutton and others. The letter book is in two volumes: Vol. I - 131 pages, 33 x 23 cm., sewn into a fragment of a 15th century manuscript on vellum; Vol. II - 44 pages, 30 x 21 cm., both volumes with damaged pages and loss of text.

This collection is organized to preserve, whenever possible, Robert Hine's original order. This includes most of his original folder titles, the original order of folders, and the original order of some of the boxes. The collection contains Hine's professional work as a historian of the American West and a writer, and includes research notes, photocopied manuscripts, newspaper clippings, interviews, correspondence, and other research related papers. As such, the original order of Hine's papers reflects his process of collecting and referencing them as he worked on various book projects. In some instances, his original folders provide insight into the kinds of questions or themes he was pursuing in the course of his work. Hine also revised the organization of these papers as he prepared them for donation to the Huntington Library in the late 1990s. Despite Hine's own curatorship, some of his papers remained unsorted and unorganized at the time of this collection's cataloging. Those have been organized by the cataloger to reflect, as much as possible, Hine's own organizational methods.

Calendars of prisoners in the county jail of Stafford, England

A collection of forty-two lists of prisoners held in the Staffordshire County gaol (jail) from March 1661 to July 1689. Each document was carefully folded into a small, tight packet and uniformly endorsed with the date, indicating a consistent and intentional filing system. The collection is arranged into six bundles with the dates 1661 to 1665, 1666 to 1669, 1670 to 1674, 1675 to 1679, 1680 to 1684, and 1685 to 1689. Prisoners on these lists were awaiting trial in the Oxford Assize courts; these lists were prepared by gaolers for clerks of the court and served a function in triggering action for the Oxford Assize courts. The prisoners were being held pending trial for numerous crimes, including theft, murder, sexual assault, mariticide, infanticide, witchcraft, bigamy, arson, and illegal religious assembly; women feature with surprising frequency, both on the charge-sheet and as victims. The collection does contain graphic descriptions of violent crimes such as sexual assault, murder, and infanticide.

Record of a voyage to the Orient in 1918

Kinney's journal starts the day he leaves California and ends the day he gets back four months later. In it, he includes details about his work on board the ship, the daily inspections, the conditions on the ocean, the meals he has, and the various stops along the route including: Hawaii, Japan, China, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. Kinney gives detailed descriptions of Honolulu, Hawaii; Tokyo and Kobe, Japan; Shanghai, China; Manila, Philippines; and Hong Kong. The typed journal includes photocopies of pages from Kinney's original diary, photographs, maps, advertisements, menus, passenger lists, and various other things he collected during his voyage.
