Markley expresses his condolences for the death of Chancey E. Stearns, who was Charles' brother. He writes of Chancey's recent visit to Somersville in Contra Costa County, where he met his death due to illness. He was a cook at a local hotel. Chancey's possessions will be forwarded to Charles. Expediente or case file for Rancho San Pablo originally granted in 1823 by Mexican governor of Alta California, Luís Antonio Argüello to Francisco María Castro, reconfirmed by Governor José Figueroa in 1834 to the heirs of Francisco Castro and claimed by Joaquín Ysidro Castro. The Rancho which was once part of the land belonging to the Mission Dolores, was a land grant in present-day Contra Costa County, California encompassing the cities of Richmond, San Pablo, and Kensington. Includes signed statements by Joaquín Ysidro Castro, Agustín V. Zamorano, Francisco Maria Castro, Jose Figueroa, Francisco del Castillo Negrete, José María de Echeandía, and Santiago Arguello.

Some of the documents also relate to railroads in the area.
