A collection of 91 items from 1897 to 1963, which consists chiefly of letters written by Charles William Watts to his wife and daughter between 1897 and 1900. The letters are written from Alaska, including Juneau, Sheep Camp, Skagway, the Yukon River Valley, Dawson, and the Klondike River Valley. Watts's letters describe the Klondike gold rush and life in Alaska and in the Yukon. The collection also contains a photograph of Charles William Watts with a group of hunters and various clippings. There are also a few letters and notes written in 1963 by Lee Rohrbough.

Collection of letters from George H. Mendell to D.D. Clarke - who was Engineer of the Water Board for Portland, Oregon - written between 1897 and 1899. Mendell writes detailed letters of instruction and advice for engineering issues raised by Clarke, particularly regarding drainage, wells, and the sinking of shafts. The majority of the letters were written from Mendell's office in San Francisco, although some originated in Los Angeles or Springfield, Illinois, where Mendell had traveled "on account of mental illness of a relative" in 1897. He also mentions meeting with Clarke in Portland on his return trip from Illinois in September 1897. Also included in the collection are a few other pieces of miscellaneous correspondence from 1894-1899 relating to water engineering in Portland.

William Lawrence Austin letters to Joseph Burn Austin

Five letters written by William Lawrence Austin to his father dealing with the Leadville Colorado silver rush of 1878-1879. One of the letters contains a sketch. Some are on J. B. Grant & Co's Smelting Works letterhead. Four of the letters were written from Leadville (one from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.)

This collection is comprised of two letters, a list of ingredients, a small note, and a mailing envelope written in a calligraphic Chinese script from John Day, Oregon in November 1881. HM 83910 (a): Liao Gengxin requests Xue Sizhan for more of an unidentified material. HM 83910 (b): Ya Wang asks Xue Yasuo for more money and briefly describes his situation as a miner. HM 83910 (c): List of ingredients for making Chinese herbal medicine. HM 83910 (d): This small note was included with one of the two letters, asking the recipient to deliver the letter to a store in Portland, Oregon and telling the shopkeeper to in turn, deliver the letter to its final recipient. HM 83910 (e): Postmarked envelope addressed to Wang Sang in Portland, Oregon. The author's names are stamped in red to verify authenticity, suggesting they were likely written by a literate calligrapher and dictated by the authors.

Note from Charles Herries

This collection contains 44 letters written by William Herries to his English relatives during his journey across the Atlantic Ocean to New York and his travels around America including Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Kentucky, the Indiana and Louisiana territories, New Orleans, and Spanish Florida. Herries writes about people he meets including President Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, James Wilkinson, and John Jacob Astor. He also describes his various economic endeavors including attempts as a fur trader, general merchant, trader of enslaved persons, and land speculator before his acquisition and operation of the Montesano plantation near Fort Baton Rouge and his eventual ruin following the short-lived West Florida Republic. There is a note from Charles Herries from approximately 1816 stating that he had recently received word that William Herries had died three or four years previously. An unsigned and undated note lists all of Herries's stops from New York to New Orleans.
