New York Artists' Classmanual No. 6, Coloured, Consisting of Twelve Landscapes

Description
One set of drawing cards entitled New York Artists' Classmanual No. 6, Coloured, consisting of twelve Landscapes, by Ed. Purcell, published by J.C. Riker, 129 Fulton St. [New York]. This set of 12 color lithograph cards consists of nature scenes- such as waterfalls and lakes- and is numbered 13-24. Each scene is signed by Ed. Purcell. Some scenes are vertically oriented on the plate, others are horizontally oriented. These images are printed on paper, rather than a heavier card stock as might be expected of a drawing card. The cards are enclosed in a paper portfolio, which is printed in a brilliant blue and gold; a floral frame surrounds the title and publication information. The lithographer's name is also printed on the portfolio cover, but only the word "Lithog." is readable.

The inside of the front cover is a manufacturer's advertisement for drawing pencils; the inside of the back cover is an advertisement for chalks, crayons, drawing paper and tints.     Coe’s New Drawing Lessons, No. IV, Drawing for Schools

    One set of drawing cards entitled Coe’s New Drawing Lessons, No. IV, Drawing for Schools, by Benjamin H. Coe, printed by D. Appleton & Co., New York, 1858. The envelope label also includes the subtitle "A Method by which all the M[emb]ers of a Large Class are taught to Draw at [once] with Neatness, Uniformity, and Accuracy." Also on the label, in pencil, is the note "This not in Drepperd". The cards are divided into four groups as listed on the label: No. 1. Perpendicular and Horizontal Lines; No. 2. Oblique and Curved Lines; No. 3. Curved Lines and Introduction to Landscape; and No. 4. Studies in Landscape. There are 47 drawing cards--all single-sided-- depicting landscapes and simple architectural outlines. Some of the cards have numbers either in the upper left-hand or the upper-right hand corners: other cards have no numbers, merely the image. It is highly probable that the cards are an amalgam of several different sets.

    One drawing/painting book, ca. 1915, entitled The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book, by F. I. Wetherbee, published by M. A. Donohue & Co., Chicago. This book is comprised of 44 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph and outline illustrations for painting. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a seated child who is painting at an easel. "M.A. Donohue & Co., Chicago" is printed in the lower left-hand corner. The back cover illustration is of a girl on a low seat reading a book. "Directions for the Little Artist" are printed on the front pastedown, opposite the title page. A few descriptive lines are printed below the title: "Being a collection of the most artistic color schemes ever produced in an instructive painting book, teaching accuracy, harmony, beauty and color with pencil, paint and brush. Complete instructions for the little artist." Most, but not all, of the images appear in pairs, one colored and the other in outline form, for coloring. Some of the illustrations have been colored.

    One drawing book entitled System of Industrial Art Drawing: Ornamentation, by E. Croasdale, published by J.M. Stoddart & Co., Philadelphia, copyright 1876. Also printed on the front cover is: "Issued in sets from the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, by E. Croasdale, Principal, Second Series, Number Three." This book contains 7 plates (plate VIII is wanting) of Egyptian design and motif. Each plate is faced by a blank page intended for copying. This book is vertically oriented, with the cover and pages intended to be lifted up, instead of to the left, as usual.

    One set of drawing cards, in a blue and white patterned-paper envelope entitled Coe’s New Drawing Cards for Schools, No. 5, printed by D. Appleton & Co., New York, ca. 1860-1880. The envelope label also includes the note "Instructions for the Series will be found with No. 1" and the statement "(Copyright Secured.)". The 17 drawing cards depict landscapes, architecture and animals. Each of the cards have a "No. 6" in the upper left hand corner, and sometimes a number in the upper right hand corner.

    One set of three original drawings, each one created by a different person, ranging in date from ca. 1780 to ca. 1890. Env. 10 contains a pencil drawing of a house that is titled, in ms., "At Andover Mass." On the verso is written, in ms., "To Eleanor, from Jennie." It is undated. This drawing measures 6 13/16 in. W x 4 13/16 in. H ; 17.3 cm. W x 12.2 cm. H. Env. 11 contains a pencil portrait of a bearded man and is titled, in ms., "Professor S.F.B. Morse." On the verso, "A.N. Chyace" is written in ms. This drawing is vertically oriented. It measures 4 7/8 in. W x 7 11/16 in. H ; 12.4 cm. W x 19.5 cm. H. Env. 12 contains an ink drawing on laid paper. The drawing is of four birds; two large and two small. Written in the verso of the sheet, in ms., is "Mary." This drawing is horizontally oriented, and measures 7 1/4 in. W x 2 6/8 in. H ; 18.3 cm. W x 7 cm. H. Title supplied by cataloger.
