  Nine books entitled New Art Education, published by Prang Company Publishers, "A Division of The American Crayon Company, Sandusky, Ohio", copyright 1944, 1945 and 1947. The books are numbered, 1-9; laid into each is a second book, an accompanying teacher guide, entitled Teachers Reference and Course of Study, published in 1947. (One book is intended for the teacher and one for the student.) Accompanying these nine sets are three teacher reference guides titled Teachers Reference and Course of Study. The first is labeled "A", "to accompany New Art Education Books I, II, III"; the second is labeled B, and the third C, to accompany Books 4, 5, 6 and 7, 8, 9 respectively. These books contain ideas, instructions and projects for a wide variety of arts and crafts projects for schoolchildren. All nine sets, and the Teachers Reference and Course of Study vols. A-C, are illustrated typically in black and white. Each of the nine New Art Education books and each of the Teachers Reference books have "Mabel Spofford" written in ms., in ink, on the front cover, and some on the title page. Laid into Book I of New Art Education are two TLSs on Stover School Art Service (of Birmingham, Michigan) letterhead, which are promotional and advertising solicitations for art projects and supplies. One letter is dated Jan. 18, 1933, the other Sept. 24, 1935; each is addressed to Miss Mabel Spofford , Supv. of Drawing, Gloucester, Mass. Within each letter are a few sample art projects for examination.

  One book entitled Art and Materials for the Schools: Activities to Aid the War and the Peace, by Sibyl Browne, published by Progressive Education Association, New York, copyright 1943."P.E.A. Service Center Booklet 2" is printed at the bottom of the front cover. This book is 112 pages in length, contains black and white illustrations, and bibliographical references. "Copyright 1943 by Progressive Education Association" and "Printed in the United States of America by Reliable Press, Inc., New York, N.Y." are printed on the verso of the half-title. The book is divided into 13 primary topics: "Materials and Design; Art and Aviation Education; Map Making; Pictorial Charts; Informative Exhibits; Puppetry; Posters, Handbills, and Booklets; Dyeing, Painting, and Printing with Natural Materials; Weaving and Rug Making; Pottery and Modeling; Carving Wood, Plaster and Stone; Using Light and Materials for Photograms; Exploring Plastics." Laid in is an instructional sheet published by Educational Materials, Inc. for hand loom weaving. "Mabel Spofford, 1944, $1.25" is written in ms. on the front cover.

  Report of the Committee on Elementary School Art

  Visual Materials

  One pamphlet entitled Report of the Committee on Elementary School Art, Bess Eleanor Foster, Chairman, published by the Federated Council on Art Education, 1926. This report is 32 numbered pages in length; it is not illustrated. The first 7 pages include a list of related associations, a president's preface, a table of contents and an introduction. Several of the sections were written by named individuals, rather than the Council as a whole. There are ms. notes and annotations throughout. "Mabel Spofford, her book" is written in ms., in ink, on the bottom of the front cover.

  American Text Books of Art Education: Geometrical Drawing, Numbers One and Two

  Visual Materials

  Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Geometrical Drawing, Numbers One and Two, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Co., Boston, 1875. Each of the two books are 20 pages in length, and contain numbered problems and exercises. Each exercise consists of instructional text, a lithograph illustration, and space for copying. The exercises increase in difficulty and complexity through the course of each book, and within the series. The front covers are identical to each other, as are the insides of the front and back covers. The insides of the front covers contain "General Directions to Teacher and Pupil"; the insides of the back covers contain names, definitions and visual definitions of "geometric solids", as well as publisher's advertisements for other Smith materials. The back covers advertise Prang's "American Text-Books of Art Education, prepared by Prof. Walter Smith." The exercises in Book Number Two have been completed, in pencil.

Leland, published by the Government Printing Office, Washington. This pamphlet is 38 numbered pages in length, and is not illustrated. The table of contents is listed on p. 3, and is divided into three sections: Introduction; Practical Teaching; and General Observations. The embossed ownership stamp of the Essex Institute is stamped in the upper right-hand corner of the title page;a Dewey decimal call number is written in ms. on the title page verso.

  Visual Materials

  One drawing book entitled Practical Drawing, Art Education Edition, Book 5 by Practical Drawing Company of Chicago and Dallas, copyright 1925. The book contains both black and white and color illustrations, some of which are meant to be copied in the space provided (the facing page); others are studies in color, image, composition or proportion. The front cover features a color illustration of two young girls in mid-19th century dress playing with a stick and hoop on the front steps of a home. The back cover features the logo of the Practical Drawing Company. The insides of the front and back covers are decorated with a pale orange geometric pattern. The contents of this drawing book include a mixture drawing lessons, craft projects and picture studies of both old and modern paintings, posters, and illustrations. Instructions to students for further creative work accompany many of the illustrations and images. "50 [cents symbol]" is written in ms., in blue pencil, on the upper right hand corner of the first leaf inside the front cover.
