  This collection contains approximately 700 pieces of ephemera that along with more than 500 separately cataloged books form the Diana Korzenik Collection of Art Education representing the evolution of art education in the United States from mainly 1800 to 1950. The collection was assembled by Massachusetts professor Diana Korzenik over a period of nearly three decades, and the ephemera is composed of instructional materials (e.g. art instruction manuals, art reproductions, drawing books, drawing cards, painting books, penmanship books, etc.), objects (e.g. boxed painting sets, drawing slates, models, drawing desks, colored pencils, crayons, paint, etc.) and non-instructional materials (e.g. promotional materials, scrapbooks, coursework by Korzenik's students, catalogs, etc.). With the exception of the Mabel Spofford archive, which she purchased as a whole, Korzenik pursued each item individually with the aim of assembling frequently overlooked and misunderstood material.

  American Text Books of Art Education: Model and Object Drawing, Number One and Number Two

  Two drawing books entitled American Text Books of Art Education: Model and Object Drawing, Number One and Number Two, by Walter Smith, published by L. Prang & Company, Boston, 1875. There are two copies of Number One; one is issued separately, the other bound together with Number Two. This "double issue" has an additional plain paper cover, with a Prang ownership stamp in the upper right-hand corner. On the inside of this additional cover is an ink stamp reading: "Royal B. Farnum, Director Art Education, State of Massachusetts", with "7/6/28" written in ms., in ink, below it. Each of the books is 20 pages in length, and contain numbered exercises. Each exercise is comprised of instructional text, a lithograph image for copying, and space for copying. The books have not been completed by previous owners. Some of the objects and models pictured in the books include: fruit and vegetables, drinking vessels of various kinds, seashells, chairs and geometrical solid forms. On the inside of each of the front covers are directions and instructions for using the books; on the inside of the back covers are illustrated names and definitions of the shapes and forms used throughout, and an advertisement for wooden drawing models. On the back covers are publisher's advertisements for other Smith books.

  Clay Modeling in the School Room

  One art instruction book entitled Clay Modeling in the School Room, by Ellen Stephens Hildreth, published by Milton Bradley & Co., Springfield, Massachusetts, copyright 1892. The book is an instructional guide for teachers, meant for use in kindergarten and primary school classrooms and is 76 pages in length. It provides general instructions for clay modeling, and features simple to more complex creations using solid forms of clay. The front cover is decorated and illustrated, with an image of a young boy creating a large clay vase. The back cover continues some of the design elements of the front cover, and features an image of a helmeted Roman figure (head and shoulders only). The book is divided into seven series: sphere, oblate spheroid, prolate speroid, ovoid, cone, cylinder and cube; each illustrated with line drawings and includes suggested items and directions for modeling. On the final page is a publisher's advertisement for "Books for Teachers published by the Milton Bradley Company". "5-" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, on the upper right-hand corner of the title page.

  For A Good Child

  One boxed set of watercolor paints entitled For A Good Child, manufacturer unknown, ca. 1925. The set is comprised of 21 small, rectangular embossed cakes of watercolor paint, one small, round porcelain dish, and a very small quill brush. The set is housed within a wooden box with a sliding lid. The set's title is printed on a paper label mounted to the interior of the box, just above the first row of paints. The sliding lid is decorated with a color printed illustration of two children by the water's edge. The illustration is signed "Dagood" in the lower left-hand corner. Each of the cakes of paint is embossed with an image of a swan. No manufacturer's name or date is present. Also included are two folded sheets of blotting paper.

  One drawing book entitled The Prang Elementary Course in Art Instruction, Eastern Edition, published by The Prang Educational Company, Boston, New York and Chicago, copyright 1899. The subtitle reads: Description, Specimen Illustrations from different grades and Opinions of leading Supervisors and Teachers. This 40-page book is primarily a collection of written testimonials about the Prang drawing system. Pages 3-6 are devoted to an outline and explanation of the system and its various levels and courses, and the remaining pages are excerpts from letters of praise from art teachers in the U.S., illustrated with both images from the Prang instructional drawing books and samples of artwork created using the Prang courses. The first two pages are composed of illustrations. The front cover is illustrated in the upper left-hand corner with a small, rectangular image of three daffodils. On the inside of the front cover begins "European Opinions in Regard to the Prang Course", which continues onto the inside back cover and the back cover. "2- BDF as is" (price) written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.
