Cover title reads: Andrews' Progressive Slate Drawing Book: Containing all the pictures on Andrews Noiseless Drawing Slates, for Schools and Families. Front cover also has publication information: Chicago: A.H. Andrews & Co., 1878. Front cover has a decorative border. On the back cover is an image of a framed drawing slate which reads "Andrews Patent Noiseless Drawing Slate". A notice on the verso of the title page, in part, states that "Prof. Duncan McGregor, President of the State Normal School, Plateville, Wis." This book has 38 numbered pages, 29 of which are illustrated, and the remaining pages contain text. The first 2 and last 2 pages are blank and unnumbered. The inside back cover contains advertisements for school equipment and furniture, and an applied label for "Baker, Pratt & Co., School Furnishers, Importers, Booksellers, and Stationers, 142 & 144 Grand St., New York." The images proceed from simple to more complex.

Huestis, New York, 1844. The drawing book is comprised of 12 unnumbered plates of lithograph images of landscapes and scenes, all of which are unsigned. The title and publication information on the front cover are within a plain double ruled frame; the back cover is illustrated. The insides of the front and back covers are blank. A black ink ownership stamp of R. Palmer Po[s]t is stamped on the recto of the first leaf.

Huestis, New York, 1847. This drawing book is 24 unnumbered pages in length and contains lithograph images only (no text). There are several different images per page, some of which are landscapes and seascapes. Title and publication information on the front cover are within a simple frame ornamented by acorns. The insides of the front and back covers are blank, and the back cover is a publisher's advertisement from C.P. Huestis. "35-" (price) is written in ms. in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover.

    One drawing book entitled A New Series of First Class Drawing Copies, published by J. Cooke & Sons, London, ca. 1880? This book is comprised of 7 lithograph plates intended for copying. Each of the plates, with one exception, contains two images. The image on the left-hand side is a picture in outline, and the image on the right is that same image, but complete with shading and texture. The one exception is a full-page illustration that is already complete with shading and texture. The front and back covers are printed in red. The title on the front cover is within a decorative frame. The back cover features a vignette of 3 children who are drawing. "10--" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper right-hand corner of the first page.

    Three drawing books, entitled Bartholomew's Drawing Book, New Series, Nos. 1, 2 and 5, by William N. Bartholomew, published by Woolworth, Ainsworth & Co., New York, copyright 1867, 1869, and 1870 respectively. The exercises within each of the three books is comprised of 12 half-sheet numbered exercises interleaved with full-page blank leaves for copying and additional original artwork. Each book progress in level of difficulty, and the books themselves increase in their levels of complexity. Book 1 begins with exercises in drawing horizontal and vertical lines, and continues with using those lines in various combinations and patterns to draw simple designs and decorative forms. All of the exercises have been completed. On the inside front cover are notes and instructions for the series. Book 1 is missing the back cover; instructions for lessons 4 and later are missing. Book 2 incorporates angled straight lines, introduces curved lines, and begins to explore leaf and plant forms. These exercises are considerably more complex than those found in Book 1. Some of the exercises have been completed; primarily those at the very beginning and the very end of the book. The inside front cover contains notes about materials, notes to the teacher, and instructions for lesson 1. The back cover is also lacking. The 12 numbered exercises in Book 5 are of plants and flowers. Some of the images include pansies, lily of the valley, and a rose. Most of the exercises have been copied, and there are additional original drawings, some dated by the artist. The inside of the front cover contains notes about the materials to be used for this book and general remarks. The inside of the back cover contains instructions for using and copying the 12 lessons within the book. The outside back cover is a publisher's advertisement for various items within the "Bartholomew's System of Drawing", including writing and drawing slates, drawing books, drawing cards and a teacher's guide. The paper wrapper added by (presumably) Alice Dodge contains pencil sketches and doodles. "Henry I.[?] Tubbs" is written in ms. on the front covers of Books 1 and 2 in the upper right-hand corner. "Alice Dodge, Sept. 28, 1871" is written in ms., in pencil, across the top cover of Book 5.

    Two drawing books entitled Krone's Paragon Series of Drawing Books, Nos. 2 and 9, revised, published by Krone Bros., New York, copyright 1905. Book no. 2 is 16 pages in length, and is a series of line exercises, progressing from simple, single lines to combinations of lines to construct images such as flowers, patterns and shapes. The front cover of both books are bordered and illustrated, including a life-size pencil diagonally positioned across the cover. The back cover of each contains general directions for drawing, materials needed, and a listing of the titles in the series. The inside of the front and back covers of Book No. 2 provides definitions of terms, with illustrations of those terms. All of the exercises have been filled in by a previous owner. Book No. 9 consists of 8 leaves, each with an image on the upper half of the page and space below for copying. These images include a rabbit, a pig, a horse and a deer. Each of the 8 leaves is protected by a tissue guardsheet. The inside of the front and back covers contain the same definitions, explanations and illustrations as those found in Book No. 2. The cover of Book No. 9 is vertically oriented, in that the cover is lifted from bottom to top, but the interior pages are turned as usual, opening to the left. "Annette Paquin" is written in ms. along the outside of the border in the lower right-hand corner of the front cover of Book No. 9. All of the illustrations have been copied in pencil by a previous owner.
