A collection of 46 photographs and a few pieces of ephemera related to the building of Bear Valley Dam, 1884, and surveys of the Whitewater River, San Bernardino County, California, 1890s. The photographs belonged to F. E. (Frank Elwood) Brown, who was the chief engineer of the dam, which was built to provide irrigation to citrus growers in San Bernardino County. It is unclear who took the photographs, which are prints of various sizes, many with handwritten identifications. The building of the dam created Big Bear Lake, and images show the valley before and after the lake's creation. Other images depict: the granite dam being built; a long flume crossing a creek; engineers at camp; and one image of Brown and fellow Redlands founder Edward G. Judson, approximately 1886. There are also several survey photographs of Whitewater River in San Bernardino County, and a few cabinet card photographs by early regional photographers Rudolph J. Philippi, Charles T. Collier, and D. Ford of Redlands. Ephemera includes a printed map of the Lake View Tract, Riverside County, California, bearing the letterhead of the Sierra Vista Orange Land Company, F. E. Brown, President. Additionally, there are two newspaper clippings from 1897 about Brown, and a fold-out case with portrait photographs of Brown and his wife, Jessie Fremont Smith.

O'Shaughnessy Dam construction photographs and dedication program

A collection of 160 photographs (69 prints in an album and 91 loose prints) and ephemera related to the building of the O'Shaughnessy Dam, which formed the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park. The photographs are black-and-white snapshots that appear to have been taken by a worker on the dam, which was completed in 1923. The album contains images of the dam being constructed, showing equipment, a railroad, scaffolding and cranes, concrete, and workers. The loose photographs depict the worker and family members, mountain cabins, fish caught in rivers, scenery in Yosemite Valley, and additional views of the dam. Also included are clippings about the Hetch Hetchy project and the program for the "Dedication of O'Shaughnessy Dam, Hetch Hetchy Project, built by the city and county of San Francisco, July 7th, 1923."

Carleton E. Watkins photograph collection

This collection contains 430 photographs by photographer Carleton E. Watkins that chiefly depict buildings, points of interest, people, and scenery in Northern and Southern California in the 1870s and 1880s, as well as 223 photographs by photographer Alfred A. Hart documenting the construction of the western half of the transcontinental railroad by the Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) in the 1860s, which were later published by Watkins under his own imprint. Images by Watkins depict locations in California and Arizona including: Lake Tahoe, Los Angeles, the Mammoth Tree Grove, Paso Robles, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Gabriel, San Luis Obispo, San Pedro, Santa Monica, Soda Springs, Wilmington, and Yosemite, as well as views related to the Southern Pacific Railroad and of the Colorado River. There are a few images of Native Americans in Arizona and California, and several images related to trains and railroads. Photograph titles in the contents list were transcribed, when available, from captions and titles on the images; titles in square brackets were devised by Huntington Library staff.
