Hayden Geological Survey photograph album

A photographic album with 78 "Albertype" prints of photographs taken by William Henry Jackson in the American West during the Hayden Geological Surveys in 1871 and 1872. Photographs show landscapes of rivers, Yellowstone Lake, mountains, and hot springs, mostly in Yellowstone National Park, in what is now Wyoming. The last 20 plates are labeled "Hot Spring Series", and show springs, fissures, craters, and cones in the Yellowstone area. The images are Albertype or collotype prints (a photomechanical printing process) produced from Jackson's photographs by Edward Bierstadt.

John Southworth photographs of Jayhawker Spring, Death Valley
Visual Materials
A group of 10 photographs of sites in Jayhawker Spring, Death Valley, California, taken by John Southworth in 1976. The snapshots show markings on Inscription Rock from many angles, including petroglyphs and the initials of Jayhawker party member William Rood, dated 1849. There are also views of spring water sources and the surrounding canyon. The photographs have detailed captions on the back by Southworth.

Consists of nine photographs. photPF 370 contains two cuttings from the Pasadena Star News depicting the intersection of Marengo and Colorado streets, in 1885(?) and 1925(?). These images are also accompanied by annotations and a short handwritten account of land pricing at this intersection in the 1880s. Other subjects include the former Villa Street Reservoir, various floats from the 1900(?) Rose Parade, a chariot race in Tournament Park, and a photo fo an unidentified man by the falls in Eaton Canyon.

An album with 58 commercial photographs of various scenic locations in the American West and New York, chiefly containing 1-2 images per page. Locations consist of: Colorado (pages 1-8); Utah (pages 9-11); California including Lake Tahoe (page 12), San Francisco including Chinatown (page 13); Oakland (page 14), Berkeley (page 15), the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California (page 16); Geyser Canyon in Sonoma County (page 17), Yosemite (pages 19-27), and Mariposa Grove (pages 28-29); the mountains of Mount Shasta and Mount Tacoma (page 30) and Mount Hood (page 31); Yellowstone (pages 32-40); and Mohonk Lake, New York (pages 41-46). Views of Yosemite show El Capitan, Cathedral Spires, Royal Arches, Mirror Lake, Bridal Veil Falls, Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, and Glacier Point. Views of Yellowstone show Mammoth Springs Hotel, Minerva Terrace, Golden Gate Canyon, Obsidian Cliffs, Hell's Half Acre, Morning Glory Spring, Old Faithful, Splendid Geyser, Sulphur Mountain, Lower Falls, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon Hotel. Views in Colorado include Manitou Springs, the Garden of the Gods, Denver, Georgetown, Curecanti Needle, and the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas. Most of the Utah photographs are the work of C. R. Savage, some of the Colorado photographs are by William Henry Jackson, some of the Yellowstone photographs are by F. Jay Haynes, the Oregon photographs are by Isaac Grundy Davidson, the Tahoe Photographs are by R. J. Waters, and most of the rest are by I. W. Taber.

U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West, by J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson

The collection contains 106 stereographs depicting the U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Colorado River of the West (1871-1874), which was sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey and conducted by J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson. Most of the photographs are credited with John Karl Hillers, however images were also produced by E.O. Beamon and James Fennemore. The expedition series covers the southwestern Wyoming territory, the southern and northeast corner of Utah (Wasatch Mountains and Uinta Valley), southern Nevada, northern Arizona, and northern New Mexico. Various Indigenous tribal nations were photographed during the expedition and documented using phonetic spellings captured in the titles; the Kai-vav-its (Kaibab Band of Paiutes), The Uintah, Moapa Band of Paiutes, Hopi (Oraibi, Third mesa of the Hopi Nation), and Nav-a-jos (the Diné, Navajo Nation). Several Indigenous persons are noted by name. Such as, Kurá-tu and Mu-pates (Kaibab Paiute girls), Won-sí-vu and Ku-rá-tu (Kaibab Paiute girls), Tau-Gu (Headman of the Southern Paiute in Arizona), E-nu-ints-i-gaip “one of the ancients” (Southwestern Nevada Paiute elder), An-te-ro (Graceful Walker) “War chief of the Uinta Utes,” Nau-no-kwits, Ku-ri-en, and Nau-no-kwits’ eagle (Uinta Ute), Ash-tish-kel “A Chief of the Navajos” (Diné), and Chu-ar-ru-um-peak and family (Piaute family near Kaibab Plateau). There are several series titles within the collection: Views on Vermillion Creek, Views on the Sevier River, Pine Creek Series, Views on the Rio Virgen (Pa-roó-nu-weap and Mu-koon-tu-weap series), Moó-av Cañon from the Paí-yu-ní Toóm-pin woo-neir, Views on the Colorado River, Grand Cañon Series, The Cañon from To-ró-weap Valley, Marble Cañon Series, Glen Cañon Series, Views on Kanab Creek, Views on Green River (Cañon of Lodore Series, Red Cañon Series, Still Water Cañon Series, Shin-ou-av Too-weap), Views on Ashley’s Creek (tributary on Green River or Tswan-war-nav-its), Views on Brush Creek (Ka-shu-Nu-kwint), Cataract Cañon Series, Indians of the Colorado Valley Series, and Cañon of Desolation series.
