Joyful alternative : peace poets' dance
Visual Materials
A psychedelic counterculture poster promoting the peace poets' dance held in April 1967 at the California Hall in San Francisco, California. Lettering by artist John H. Myers is in the shape of a side profile in shades of blue against a bright orange background. The top right of the profile includes morphed faces and other illustrations. The lower right includes an inset illustration by poet Kenneth Patchen, one of the speakers of the event. The poster mentions performances by rock bands Country Joe & The Fish, and Serpent Power, in addition to poetic guests Richard Brautigan, Lew Welch, Robert Duncan, and others. Text on the poster also states that the event is "part of Spring Mobilization," a committee that supported the end of the Vietnam War. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner, by the Lithographers and Photoengravers International Union (LPIU) in the lower middle, and by printer Double-H Press in the lower right.

Image contains seven vignettes depicting various stages in the coining of money. One vignette is an exterior view of the Branch Mint. "Herrick SC."--text, within the upper left and lower right vignettes. "Eastman."--text, within the upper center and lower left vignettes. "Butler."--text, within the upper right and middle left vignettes. "[A. Nahl.]"--text, within the lower left vignette. The sheet is torn on the right side, and the vignettes on the right are missing portions. It also appears that the sheet was cut along the top and bottom. The top portion of some text can be seen at the bottom of the sheet. "[Published by Hutching [sic] & Rosenfield, 201 Clay St, Plaza, San Francisco. Image is a view of the harbor and town from Telegraph Hill. The town is burning at right, the harbor full of ships is at left, and crudely-drawn people are on the hill in the foreground. Baird notes that this is a reworking of the "View of the Conflagration...May 3rd 1851." "J. De Vere del."--text, below image. "Noisy Carrier's Publishing Hal[l]. 77 Long Wharf San Francisco. Charles P. Kimball Propretor [sic]."--stamped text, lower right corner. Paper color: gray. This is only the illustration; the portion of the sheet containing a map of the burnt district is missing (according to Baird's notes).
