    One painting book entitled Landscape Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York, copyright 1902. The front cover shows a winter landscape. The title page features a different title (Object Painting Book) than that found on the front cover. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for young painters," including how to mix paints. The back inside cover depicts a palette of red, green, yellow, blue and purple; matching paint has been applied to each color by the student. The book contains 8 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The outlined images were filled in using the complementary color image as a guide. All of the outlined images have been filled in with watercolors. In the upper-right hand corner of the title page, in pencil, is written "1.00".

    The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book

    One drawing/painting book, ca. 1915, entitled The Young Artist's Painting and Drawing Book, by F. I. Wetherbee, published by M. A. Donohue & Co., Chicago. This book is comprised of 44 unnumbered pages of chromolithograph and outline illustrations for painting. The front cover is a chromolithograph of a seated child who is painting at an easel. "M.A. Donohue & Co., Chicago" is printed in the lower left-hand corner. The back cover illustration is of a girl on a low seat reading a book. "Directions for the Little Artist" are printed on the front pastedown, opposite the title page. A few descriptive lines are printed below the title: "Being a collection of the most artistic color schemes ever produced in an instructive painting book, teaching accuracy, harmony, beauty and color with pencil, paint and brush. Complete instructions for the little artist." Most, but not all, of the images appear in pairs, one colored and the other in outline form, for coloring. Some of the illustrations have been colored.

    One painting book entitled Little People's Pictures Painting Book: Father Tuck's Little Artist Series, published by Kaufmann & Strauss Co., New York, ca. 1910. This 24-page painting book is comprised of lithograph images for painting and tracing and chromolithograph plates as samples. "Father Tuck's Little Artists Series" is printed in the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. The front and back covers are chromolithographs; the image on the front cover is of a boy, seated on the floor, in front of a painting he has created. The image on the back cover is of a child's drum toy. "Instructions for Little Artists" are printed on the inside of the front cover, and more information about color is printed on the inside of the back cover. "12.50" (price) is written in ms., in pencil, in the upper left-hand corner of the inside of the front cover.

    One painting book published by Charles E. Graham & Co., New York (series title: "0901 Kute Paint Book Series"). Front cover image of a young boy in a World War I army uniform. The book has 9 unique images, most in outline--only three were printed in color--chiefly depicting anthropomorphised and comical animals. One of the images, a squirrel driving a car, has been filled in using watercolors.

    One painting book entitled Marine and Landscape Studies: A Painting Book, published by McLoughlin Bros., New York. The front cover shows a landscape tacked to a wood frame. The inside front cover reads "a few practical directions for coloring;" and these also include directions on how to mix paints. The book contains 12 pages of images, half of which are printed in color, the other half in outline. The latter have all been filled in with colored pencil or crayon using the complementary color image as a guide.

    The Wild Animal ABC Painting Book

    One painting book entitled The Wild Animal ABC Painting Book, published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., 1895. The front cover shows a boy standing on a short ladder, painting the book's title on an elephant. The upper right hand corner has been cut out to conform to the elephant's forehead. The back cover had some printing, most has disappeared due to water damage, but it appears to have contained publication information. The book, printed in Bavaria, contains twenty pages of images tied to corresponding letters and text. (For example, "B is for Beaver who builds a mud home.") The majority of the images in the book are in outline form, although some are printed with a matching color image to help guide the student in the use of color. Some of the images have been painted in with watercolor.
